This is the first year that both girls are at secondary, and they break up much earlier than other schools - up to 2 weeks earlier than some. So I had decided to book a week for us in Rest Bay. We have loved going to Rest Bay, but changing in the car park isn't such a treat. We had seen a new development right on the bay, and as the flats had been sold, quite a few of them came up on the market as holiday rentals.
The girls broke up on Friday 8th and we set straight off that afternoon.
We stayed in flat 21 of The Rest. It was up on the 2nd floor. The windows weren't huge but they were low and looked out onto a great view. The view from the main living room and mine and Mark's room was out onto the beach, with a generous window ledge to sit on in each room.
We checked out places to eat in Porthcawl, tbh it didn't look promising.
I love these pictures of the girls.
Then walked back. It was a really warm week, we were so lucky with the weather. We kept these windows open the whole while. The gentle sound of the surf was lovely as was the sight of the moon on the water.
On Saturday we woke to this
and got up to take the paddle boards out.
We came back in for lunch, and then a siesta (or as Bunnykins called it....a séance). This was just lovely time to snooze and or read. The temperature was in the high 20s and the beach was busy, so this was just perfect.
Later in the afternoon, we took a walk out. Woo and I took art stuff and Bunnykins took her book.
Sunday was another glorious day.
We went out to play in the water with a paddle board and a body board.

Again in the afternoon we had a walk out.
Monday was a hot day again, and incredibly still. I have never seen Rest Bay so still. We took out both paddle boards with plenty of supplies, suncream, hats and life jackets, and paddled all the way to Porthcawl along the coast.
Jumping in the water whenever we needed to cool off...
We had lunch at Porthcawl.
Then started to paddle back. Everyone was getting a bit tired and hot.
So we tethered up, and Mark and I took the front board and the girls took it a bit easier on the back.
Just as we got to the last bay before Rest Bay, we saw 2 young women trying to get around the rocks. They looked a little out of place in cover-ups and fashion sandals, holding their handbags out of the water. We stopped and I asked if they were OK. They were doing alright, but had gone into the bay at low tide and were now trapped. The water wasn't deep, but they were much shorter than us, and it was very rocky underfoot and the waves coming into the bay made trying to wade out in sandals treacherous. One of them had a large scrape on her leg where she had fallen on a barnacle covered rock.
The water in this bay was inviting. Mark, Woo and I went in for a swim, but it was so rocky underfoot, I did wish I had stayed just soaking in the breakwater by the shore.
We went back and cleaned up before walking out with ice creams to see a beautiful sunset.

We untethered and our girls stayed out of the bay (they were about at waist height holding their board). Mark and I walked carefully in with the other board. It wasn't easy, it was so uneven underfoot, but the wetsuit boots are the perfect footwear. We held the board steady while they both climbed on. Then Mark and I walked the board back out. We tethered up again and Mark walked along pulling the front board with our girls on and I walked alongside the back board. I got up to chest height in the water as we rounded the rocks towards Rest Bay. The young women were from Bristol and had come out to Rest Bay for the first time, they weren't aware of how the tides could be. I urged them to go get the graze checked out with the lifeguard (there was blood flowing down her leg!) but I think they went just to sit on the beach to sunbathe! Oh well. I think they would have managed to climb out of the bay if they had needed to, the rocks are very blocky, but I think they would have found it very difficult and would probably have got more hurt. So I was glad we stopped to help.
We then played in the water, jumping in for another half hour.
On Tuesday we just went out to play in the water. We took the paddle board, and a body board. The sky was overcast, and there wasn't much surf but it was very tidy with an occassional large wave. It was beautiful. I hadn't taken the camera. It was such a good day though. Bunnykins was body surfing in the waves. Woo and Mark were surfing on the body board, and I was catching loads of waves on the body board. We stayed in for ages.

We got cleaned up and then Mark and I nipped out to have a look at some of the remaining properties for sale.
Bit more siesta time
Then we went out for a walk (with ice creams of course)
(ice cream on my arm....doh!)
We went for supper at the cafe.
And nipped back out for a dramatic sunset with a beautiful double rainbow.
Wednesday was Woo's birthday.
We went back out to do a similar thing as yesterday, but this time I took my camera.
The surf was quite wild. It was great fun again. Some of the waves were quite big. Bunnykins and I had an ace time. It was busier so Mark and Woo were further down the beach away from the swimmers, but there were a lot of surfers so it wasn't really safe for us to be there too.
I did manage to get some pictures though.
Quite a lot of pictures really....

In the evening we took the open top bus to Porthcawl.
And had a nice meal out. The girls did enjoy it, they were just pooped.
Mark had some early morning runs (while I was quite happy to stay in bed reading, sleeping or looking at the view).
On Thursday morning we had breakfast at the cafe.
Then went back out.
We hired a surfboard for Woo.
Though the surf wasn't great.
Again, Mark and Woo were further down the beach.
She was getting on really well with it.
picture taken while catching a wave 😂
It was really windy, we had a walk along the beach in the afternoon.
The girls found places to hide from the wind
I drew a picture of some pebbles.
The tide was coming in. Mark and Bunnykins went up the rocks, and Woo and I decided to paddle through the shallows to get back.
We went out for our last sunset of the week (with ice creams)
Then on Friday we had to pack up and go home. We will be back.
It was nice to be home. Though we had an even crazier heat wave (up in the 30s) from the Sunday through to the Tuesday.
On the following weekend, Woo went out with her friends for her birthday.
Lazer fusion.
And then to a games café. I sat on my own which was fine.
And they had a great time with whatever this game is....
