Friday we had tickets for a fireworks display, but it was pouring down so instead we watched it from Squidge’s bedroom window.
5th November
On Saturday was Yasmin’s birthday party…
At the end of the party there were fireworks outside, which the girls weren’t keen on, but they did have a go with sparklers…
6th November
We were up early on Sunday to head out to visit Grandma and Granddad at their holiday cottage in Wales. The girls got us up, and before we drew the curtains we played with the LEDs from a couple of popped balloons…
Squidge checked out our en-suite, which at this point was not quite finished but really getting there!
We drove along to Larne, which was almost exactly a Mary Poppins away, so the girls were happy watching DVDs in the back of the car. It was a lovely sunny but fresh day, perfect for a stroll…
We walked along to see Dylan Thomas’s writing shed. On the way there was a sign directing people down one path to the Boat House and one to the Cliff House. I said to Fidget that we wanted to go to the Boat House and asked her which path we should take. She sounded out "c-l-i-f-f mmm cliff" then "b-o-a-t boat!" she was less sure about the direction of the arrows but she got the right sign!
We went back up to the restaurant at the holiday cottages for lunch
We walked down to the front, Squidge needed her bum changing and I obliged on a nearby bench. Unfortunately there had been a bit of leakage and we didn’t have any spare leggings. Fidget had shorts over her leggings and as it was a mild-ish day and Squidge had on boots I shouted across to Fidget to ask her to lend Squidge her shorts. As Fidget was wriggling out of her shorts she shouted back to Squidge:
“you’d better keep these dry cos I’m not giving you my trousers!!”
I fell about laughing, Fidget was so serious thinking that there was a risk she would have to wander about in her pants! Poor lovely.
We had an ice cream then walked back up to the cottage which had a beautiful view of the bay. Squidge fell asleep on the way back.
Squidge woke up in the cottage but was getting really tired and whiney. Fidget hurt her head falling off the sofa, Suidge, still teary eyed, came over questioning “Faith?” then asked me if the cup of milk on the table was Fidgets and then offered it to Fidget. It was very sweet and caring. They really are such good sisters to each other it is lovely to see.
On the Monday night we had a parents evening, so far Fidget had been sent home with fairly limited homework - learn the letters "p,i,n and s,a,t" I'd even been slightly admonished with a note from the teacher when we did all 6 rather than 3 at a time. This was a bit frustrating as Fidget has long known her phonic alphabet and at the time of going to school was starting to be able to sound out and read simple words. So anyway I talked to the teachers, and as suspected Fidget can be pretty reserved in group situations and hadn't spoken up or demonstrated anything to the teachers that would suggest she knew her alphabet. It was really good to have a chat and I explained the cliff house, boat house thing Fidget had done at the weekend and they said she probably just recognised the first letter but I said no - she had sounded out the whole word and they were really surprised, but said they would sit down with her quietly and try and test her reading a bit more.
The next day M was walking her to school and they passed a sign (Fidget does like street signs), this one was quite long, but she sounded out S-U-THE-R-L-A-N-D (recognising "the" as one of the fast words she had done in class) and said "Sutherland?!" she didn't think it was much of a name for a street, but she got it right all the same. I wrote this in her contact book. The next day she came home with her sound book with more sounds, a fast word book, a word box (has small laminated cards with a word on). And it wasn't long before a book arrived in the book bag. I'm not sure if Fidget appreciated my efforts to get her more homework - sorry Fidget!!
10th November
I had been to Zumba the night before and popped into Sainsbugs and picked up new hats, scarves and gloves for the girls. They were both impressed…
12th November
Grandma and Granddad came back from their holiday via Bristol. We went out into Bristol on Saturday and met up with Uncle A at the German Market. We were tempted in for some gluevein. The stallholders were pleased to chat away with M in German.
Uncle A had made some soup for us back up at his place…
Squidge was asleep and the sun coming through the window was intense hence the cool headgear M had to borrow.
Uncle A played a bit of ukulele, and Fidget was keen to have a go. I love these pictures of A and Fidget…
After lunch we left Uncle A to his study and walked down to the river then caught the ferry across.
We walked along and found some super leaves, where I tried to get a picture of the girls with leaves falling down over them (thrown by M), it was rather more difficult that hoped, but did still get a few pictures…
19th November
the girls helping make the tea cosies…
later on we wrote letters to Santa, the girls dictated their list to me and then decorated the letters…
Fidget had seen a tea-set in a catalogue which she asked for. I had no idea who baby Timmy was, I asked Squidge if baby Timmy was a sheep (as in Timmy time), but got a firm no, mmm not so helpful for Santa!
26th November
The girls helped me make this years Christmas cards…
