Monday was back-to-work for Mark and I. I got started at 7:30am as while I had avoided thinking about work pretty well over the 2 weeks off, when the day of return had arrived, I needed to just get it over with and find out if there were any disasters waiting for me. Fortunately, there were none, or at least they were on someone else's plate, so the day went OK. I nipped out with the girls mid-morning to take them to the dentist. It was a break of sorts. But the girls are always good company, so I was glad to be out with them, even if I struggle to keep stride with their walking pace.
At lunch time they went off to the library together which I think is just splendid. In the evening I went out for UkuleleLand rehearsal at Kevan's. Geoff was back with us after a long absence. It was lovely to see him and Kevan had cracked open some drinks to celebrate.
On Tuesday I started the day with a run. There was a light drizzle, but it was actually very welcome. The weather hasn't been sunny, it always seems a bit grey and overcast, but the temperatures aren't actually cold. It's high teens most days.
Anyway, it felt like a good start to the day. I showered and got on with work. At lunch we took advantage of a break in the rain to nip out to the hatch for lunch. And then in the evening I had a catch up with John.
On Wednesday morning first thing I went out for another run. No drizzle this morning and it was all much hotter and therefore harder as a result. Not quite sure at the moment how I am going to make it all the way around on the Bournemouth 5k, but I guess as long as I finish, it's all cool.
I had asked Hannah if M wanted to come over to play tennis or just hang out with Bunnykins. She came over after lunch and stayed for the afternoon. They did play a bit of tennis, but I also gave them some money for the hatch and they went to hang out in the park. I think they loved this, well Bunnykins certainly did. I think it is a taste of independence. I don't want to think I have smothered them or done that helicopter parenting thing. I have tried to embrace more of a concept of benign neglect at times in order to encourage them to find things to do and because I have too many other draws on my time. But the truth is, that given her best friends aren't close, and I think also because she likes being at home, she doesn't go out much on her own.
Mark had a run in the evening with the Bristol Trail Runners. Earlier in the week I had seen that stocks of A+ blood was low so had booked myself in. I was due another donation, but it was around the time of the first vaccination that I got a reminder and so I had had a bit of a hiatus, but felt suitably settled to go donate now. I think that is now my 19th donation, I think at 25 I might get a badge...loves a badge me! 😄
Thursday was the day of the big sleepover. I got started with work early again (7am), so that I could finish early and also pick up the girls around 3pm. Bunnykins and Woo got the tent set up and then promptly got to reading in there.
Woo had found a book at the library that she was really in to and was devouring it.
Mark made tea, but then he and Woo went out to frisbee. Ben came over, I was glad of his company, he is good with kids. The dinner table discussion was loopy, and I was glad that he could hold court while I was up and down with getting stuff to the table.
I lit a fire for them and got out some marshmallows and chocolate digestives so they could have smores.
Bunnykin's friends are lovely girls and they were good fun laughing and chatting as they toasted away.
Ben and I had a couple of marshmallows too and exchanged notes on the best technique for toasting.
M preferred a burn-baby-burn approach, while A was very much the opposite - slow and steady.
Ben played a few tunes for us on his uke. The girls had a good sing-a-long and dance.
I said goodbye to Ben and not long after, Woo and Mark arrived home. I had saved her a pair of biscuits and some marshmallows.
The girls went off to get ready for bed, while Woo and I sat chatting.
then playing with the settings on the camera and getting the ends of the sticks to glow. It was a very peaceful evening and it was lovely to sit out with her until it got dark and all the lamps were coming on. I particularly enjoyed poking the coals with her and her observation that it looked like each one had little monsters in them the way the shadows moved inside.
On Friday I went for another run in the morning. I wasn't really feeling it, not sure if it was the giving blood 2 nights previous, or the heat again. But anyway, I did it, so that is all that mattered.
We played cards a while, then Mark had a little snooze. We were both wrapped up in blankets, it was restful.
The card playing resumed. I wanted to stay out until my new lights came on. It was getting a bit tricky to play as it got darker. I have also noticed that my vision isn't what it used to be.
But it was fun anyway, and very atmospheric.
At 12 (and starting a little late) was Dancing Tots, which is a pair of people who are just bubbly, funny personalities who play music, do a few games and make kids laugh.
We stood and joined in with some of the dancing and singing, it was a lot of fun and their audience, which built up of toddlers and pre-schoolers, was entirely rapt and engaged.
We got started a little late, and our audience wasn't quite so rapt... opposite us in the other red gazebo was the silent disco...on reflection not the most encouraging place for it to be sited. As we played it seemed like we had a good crowd of people dancing along. Then you realise they are all wearing headphones! One lady came along, dancing to our music and was ushered over to them "here, have headphones!!" 😂.
We wandered back up as Ben was due to perform solo at 3pm. He'd asked Claire's son M to join him and perform. It was lovely to see Claire and I was able to give her her birthday present from earlier in the week.
M did brilliantly, he was so brave and such a good little singer.
When I got back, I poured a beer and read a while. Mark was off doing various jobs and I felt uneasy just generally not knowing what the plan was for tea or what I should be doing.
I wandered down the garden and picked a handful of tomatoes and a handful of runner beans. I went in to find that Mark had sorted out some boiled potatoes for a potato salad.
As we sat there a gentle rain was falling. With it being a still night it didn't trouble us under the pergola. But as we ate, it got heavier...
and heavier...
until it was fairly beating down. You know if you can pick it up on camera...then it's heavy rain.
It was getting to the point that we were getting a bit damp. If we had been determined to stay out, it wouldn't have been a problem, but we decided to go in and catch up on Gardener's World.
Still, once we had our table and drinks we were happy to relax.
Though I have to say I was tested a bit, when our delicious deserts were brought to us and the guy said "oh I'll just go get you spoons" and then disappeared off for 5 minutes, served some other tables, ran up and down a bit. Just before I dived in there with my face, he appeared with spoons and apologies.
We cycled home. My legs weren't a problem, but my arse was! A plan has been made to go to Halfords and get me a new seat, ideally with more padding and one that can have the height adjusted as that is certainly part of the problem.
