Fidget’s birthday was a school-day, but in the morning there was time to open some presents. Granny had made a puppet theatre which was fantastic and really lovely of her to have put all the hard work into making it, the girls were very excited.
Fidget opened her presents from us, including the campfire set, which initially she was clearly quite puzzled about…
but with a little help got it set up…
We were all very excited about the full moomins box set…
A present of a bracelet with replaceable letters from Squidge…
ah! time to roast some marshmallows…
and then a special birthday breakfast…
books above from Great Grandma and a fab atlas from Uncle A and Aunty B…
then before school there was time for a quick performance…

14th July
On the Saturday was a birthday party at the church hall. Squidge was able to go too which was fantastic. There was a magician who was pretty doddery but none of the kids seemed to mind.
Fidget was asked to go up to assist. Squidge kept wandering nonchanently up to help out and kept being told to go sit down, which she would do in a fairly nonplussed way.

Sunday was another party, this one was a soft play party which Fidget really enjoyed. We then went out for lunch and took Fidget to have her eyes tested. We had received a form home saying that Fidget had failed some eye tests at school and that she needed to see an optician. Daddy also had a test booked at the same time so they went in together. Fidget was very grown up about the whole thing.
Squidge and I grooved around in the shop where she fixed on a pair of kids glasses that honestly I would have picked as the worst pair in the whole shop but she really thought they were supper and to be honest on Squidge they looked rather groovy.
It was a nice afternoon (for a change) so when we got back it was time to go out in the garden and play with bubbles.
20th July
Fidget was on school hols, I had the Friday off and Grandma and Granddad had arrived for the weekend.
They brought a fantastic science kit for Fidget, which she loves and has been doing lots of experiments with. It was a lovely warm day and we hopped on the bus to head into town.
The girls loved being on the top deck of the bus and sat right at the front. They kept worrying about hitting trees and people walking on the pavement. Squidge spotted a wig that someone had thrown on top of a bus shelter and shouted “someone has left their hair!!”.
The harbour festival was on that weekend, and I had mistakenly thought there was more going on on the Friday. But it was such a beautiful day it was great to play in the fountains and the girls had a great time.
21st July
On the Saturday, we all (including M) jumped on the bus again and went into Bristol. There was much more on. We started in Castle Park, where there was a Heart FM tent doing free face painting and giving out lemonade. The ladies invited Fidget in for a face paint, she agreed but was fairly reserved as usual. Squidge on the other hand, barged forward to take her turn, showing how familiar she was with the process by offering her face forward as soon as she sat down.
We wandered along to Queen’s square. The girls had a go on some bouncy stuff then we found a spot on the grass. M and Granddad went off to buy picnic food from the surrounding continental market and we listened to the cool sounds while we enjoyed our lunch.
It was very busy, but we wandered along with the crowd and saw some super jazz singers at the cascade steps.
After the set had finished we moved into millennium square where Fidget was entranced by flamenco dancers. We walked all along the harbour towards the SS Great Britain. I had hoped to pick up a ferry back to Castle Park but the stop I was aiming for had been removed due to the festivities. We queued up for a ferry to cross the river, we stood in line for about half an hour, with the girls wriggling to run about which was not going to happen on the jetty.
We got across the river, miraculously just as the ferry arrived, and even more miraculously there was hardly anyone waiting for it. The big queue was for people wanting just to cross back to the other side.
It was lovely to sit down on the boat, with a cool breeze, out of the crowds, watching the hustle and bustle on the banks.
An extra bonus was that the route under a bridge was closed for about 20 mins while some rescue dogs did a display so we just sat on the boat, watching the display very comfortably.
At Castle Park we grabbed a bite to eat for the girls and then got the bus home. A fab day in Bristol.
30th July
M’s cousin and her family were coming through Bristol on their way to support D taking part in a Landsend to John’o’groats. We’d seen them at the weekend, on the Monday they came across to the house. D and little C were not feeling well, so there was quite a bit of sitting around on the sofa watching vids. Fidget was very keen to look after her favourite cousin C and was very sad to see them go.
1st August
The day previous, I had taken the girls into Bristol on the bus for the afternoon. We had gone to the Bristol Museum to see some fossils, as there was a touchy feely session. The girls loved running round the rest of the museum. Fidget particularly loved the ceramics.
Walking back to the bus, Honour tripped and managed to fall directly onto her lip. She came up clutching her face covered in blood! What was lovely was how many people came over to see if they could help (though none of them were carrying a clean tissue). We went into Boots to buy tissues and antiseptic wipes (my supply was rapidly diminishing). A huge queue, but they all turned and seeing the bloodied child in my arms sent us right to the front - bless you boots customers!
So on the Wednesday the girls opted for a more sedate day at home.
