Friday 10th June after M finished working we bundled in the car and headed uuuup-north to stay with Grandma and Grandad for a week.
Saturday morning was sunny and bright, so the girls headed out to explore the garden…
By lunchtime though the weather had got very wet. M walked into town during a break in the weather to have his hair cut, there was another big downpour so we decided we would drive down and pick Daddy up. We then went into Ropewalk art gallery and had a look around.
Making friends with the £300 (each!) ducks….
Grandma had bought the girls lovely dresses that they were wearing, so we had a go at taking some pictures…
Sunday had some good weather, so it was time to get out in the garden again…
The summer before Squidge was born we had a similar holiday in Hull, I have been looking back to compare pictures, such as…
Last time there was no trampoline however…
Grandad has loads of cool garden toys which meant a game of golf-football was in order…
On Monday it was time to head out to see the sights. The morning was looking grey so we decided to cheer it up by heading to Cleethorpes…
In the morning we went to the swimming pool and had a good splash about, then it was a fish and chip lunch. The afternoon brightened up so we pitched up on Cleethorpes beach. Cleethorpes is on the mouth of the Humber so not recommended for swimming or even intense paddling, but the beach is clean with soft sand and interesting shells, so the girls we very happy.
We then had a toasted cheese sandwich for the girls tea, though Fidget disappeared and was replaced by Darth Vader….
Tuesday looked to be good weather so we decided to head for Scarborough and the North Bay…
Back in 2009 we had the same visit to Scarborough during our week holiday…

Some of the photos from the Scarborough day are very similar, along with Grandad’s outfit…
The weather was fantastic and we had a great day playing on the beach…
Squidge loved the sand, rolling around in it and dropping it over her legs, she was by the end of the day, the sandiest baby ever!
the guys on a sand aeroplane…
we enjoyed some icecreams…
In the afternoon we packed up and walked along the front as earlier in the day Grandma and Grandad had spotted a little train that ran back into the town…
We took the train back to Peasholm Park.
This Fidget enjoying the toot of the whistle…
a tunnel…
After a walkround the park, we set off for Filley
Where the best fish and chips are to be found, along with the best view (looking the other way, you’ll just have to imagine!)…
Fidget was enjoying feeding Squidge, which Squidge was enjoying also…
Then time to recreate the picture with the view…
On Wednesday we went across the river to meet up with Aunty N and little T at East Park in Hull….
The kids had great fun at the play area…
Then we had some lunch, a wander around the animal enclosure and then on to the paddling stream…
the kids had a great time paddling
Squidge really loved it and started trotting about, followed by us yelling “slow down!!”, followed by her falling on her face in the water, followed by her having to wear Fidget’s over vest (cleverly tightened at the back with a clothes peg – daddy style!)
Wednesday evening Uncle A had arrived, so on Thursday we decided to take a walk across the Humber bridge.
I had some reservations as we had the smaller pram with us which only 1 kinder can go on at a time, and as the barriers on the bridge are waist height and it is a very high bridge (over a muddy, big river), I was adamant that no-body was being carried on shoulders so the plan was really relying on Fidget being able to walk the 2 miles over the bridge. Anyway we set off…
I held Fidget’s hand tightly, I am usually pretty scared myself when I cross the bridge on foot, as I don't like heights. I also have nightmares about the girls drowning, so I was actually terrified. Halfway across Fidget said she was tired. Squidge was in the pram and there was no way she was going on shoulders. So I put her on my back and gave her a piggy back the rest of the way across. I had tight hold of her legs and she was gripping around my neck. The wind was blowing my hair across my eyes, but I could see enough to stick tight to the road side of the path and march at top speed to wait for the others at the 2nd tower.
After a few minutes the rest of the gang arrived….
We then went down to the Humber Bridge Country Park and had our packed lunch.
and then a play…
We then had a walk along one of the trails…
We took the bus back home which was alot less nerve wracking!
Having done Cleethorpes and Scarborough, we wanted to finish our week with another great beach of the north….Bridlington…
It was quite an overcast and threatening day. The dogwalking part of the beach was reasonably well populated, but no-one else was joining us to sun on the sand.
There was a fierce wind blowing, so the guys used the large chalk boulders to build a protective wall.
There were interesting stones to explore (and lots of bits of smashed-up crab – nice!)
And a packed lunch to be enjoyed…
The tide was out so we ventured down to the water…
and then hid in the tent for a while…
before going back to the water
the beach was great for having a run about on…
Back in 2009, Uncle A and M had enjoyed a swim at Scarborough. M was fairly adamant that today was not the day to repeat the experience (he didn’t even take off his shoes the whole time), but A was all for it….
We packed up then went for a walk down the front, with Uncle A gamely offering to carry Fidget…
We found a cafe to get a toasted teacake for the girls and warm drinks for us…
We took some teamchallis team photos, not all entirely successful…
We had icecreams, waffles and doughnuts on the front then walked back to the car, just making it before the heavens opened.
For Saturday the plan was to have a BBQ, but the weather was threatening so everyone had a go at erecting the gazebo – super fun!
It was great to see the family and the kids had a lovely time playing.
“Say cheese Squidge!”
Fidget made a new friend in little A from down the road. She didn’t learn his name properly but had a lovely time playing and when she was finally dragged up to bed, she was yelling “I want to play with the boy! I want to play with the boy!!!”
Sunday was Father’s day and the girls gave Daddy a photo mug with lots of super pictures of the 3 of them.
We then took a walk out to have a super lunch at a nearby pub, yum, chocolate pud!
We then walked onto the park to have a play…
A walk home in the rain and then packing up. Fidget did not want to go home. We all had a super week. Thanks so much Grandma and Grandad!
